Norman Miles was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Havre, Mont., and passed from life on July 5, 2008, in Placerville, Calif., at the age of 90. Norman is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Kinard Miles; father, Charly "Chas" Miles; mother, E. Blanche Miles; brothers, Jerry and Carter Miles; and his grandparents, Lewis and Nancy Miles. He is survived by brothers, Edison D. Miles of Oregon City, and Donald A. Miles of Tonto Basin, Ariz. Also surviving is daughter, Norma Potter and husband, Joseph of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Wayne Miles and wife, Angie of El Dorado, Calif.; daughter, Gayle Cook and husband, Tom of Emporia, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Lisa Kalua of Monument, Colo., Lana Dorman of Gatesville, Texas, Heath Miles of Shingle Springs, Calif., Toria Hamre of Killeen, Texas, Elizabeth Ruecker of Portland, Leann Sanchez of Emporia, Kan., Jennifer Miles-Peek of Placerville, Calif.; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Following several moves, the family settled on a farm outside Oregon City. Norman graduated from Canby High School and automotive school before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1940. After training as a radioman, Norman was assigned to Hawaii aboard the USS New Orleans. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941, and 13 campaigns in the Pacific. At the end of World War II, Norman and his wife settled in San Francisco before relocating in Oregon. In the '50s he was employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau than became an FAA air traffic controller working in Oregon, Idaho, Montana and finally San Diego County at Lindberg Field, Brown Field, Miramar NAS and Gillespie Field. After retirement, Norman spent 10 years working for Grossmont Union High School District, San Diego. In 1979, Norman and the love of his life "Betty" relocated back to the family farm in Oregon. During this time his parents passed and Norman and Betty relocated to the Placerville, Calif., area. Always a sports fan, Norman followed local and national teams. For a time he was an active Ham Radio operator. Norman loved his large extended family. Those of us he has left behind love him greatly and wish him a good journey beyond. Services to be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego on Thursday July 17, at 11 a.m. Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home Placerville, Calif.
