PRESTON, Minn.—Doris Marion (Hansen) Kimber, 88, of Preston died on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Spring Valley Care Center.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, with the Rev. Dave Jore officiating. Burial will be at Fort Snelling at a date to be determined.

Doris was born on Jan. 16, 1923, at home in Eureka Township near Farmington, Minn., to Harry and Hannah (Mickelsen) Hansen. She grew up on her family's farm as the youngest of five children.

After graduating from Farmington High School, she worked at the local creamery until her marriage to Gordon Kimber on Christmas Day 1943, when he finally got a three-day leave from the Army. They lived in Cincinnati, where Gordon was stationed until he was deployed to Europe. Like many young women of her time, she kept the home fires burning and bore her first child while her husband was abroad for over two years in military service during WWII.

Four years later after re-establishing their lives in Bricelyn, Minn., her husband was recalled to active duty by the Army for the Korean War. Once again she demonstrated her strength and courage while she maintained their home and two children during Gordon's 18-month absence.

Shortly after Gordon's return, they moved to Hayward, Minn., where she made many lifelong friends. In 1959, they moved to Preston, Minn., where she was active in the community and many activities at Christ Lutheran Church more than the past 50 years.

Doris will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; a kind friend to many; and a dedicated Christian and member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Doris is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Gordon; her children Jean (Richard) of Anacortes, Wash., Thomas (Jacqueline) of Minnesota City, Minn., Wayne (Susan) of Winona, and Ann (Gregory) of Stanchfield, Minn.; her twin sister Dorothy Pettis of Farmington, Minn.; her sister Esther Hanson of Casper, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Alice Nielsen and Ruth Pettis; and her brother Russell Hansen.
