Ellen W. Baldwin, 85, of Lincoln died Friday, July 1, 2011, at her home. Ellen was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Giessen, Germany, to Albert and Emmy (Koch) Wendel.

On June 22, 1953, she married Theodore G. Baldwin in Denver. He died Dec. 8, 1972.

Survivors include her son, Mike Baldwin, his wife Jo of Kearney and their children, Jacob Baldwin of Boulder, Colo., Anna Baldwin of Denver and Ellen Baldwin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Julie Baldwin Brown of Dallas and her children, Emmy Brown of New York, N.Y., Theodore "Ted" Brown of Denver and Walton Brown of Boulder; sister, Marianne Schleichkorn of Apopka, Fla., and her sons, Raymond Schleichkorn and wife, Debi, of Apopka and their son, Jonathan, Peter and wife, Ilene, of Melville, N.Y., and their children Adam, Allison and Evan, and Henry and wife, Susan, of Chicago and their children, Aaron, Jordan and Avery; nephews and niece, Rick Ender with wife, Lou, of Scottsdale and children, Matthew with wife, Jennifer, and children Cynthia and Nathanial, Beth and husband Daniel McDonnell and children Aiden and Nolan; Dave Ender and wife Bonnie of Tempe, Ariz., and sons Robert and Ted; and Julie Jackson and husband Earl and sons Eric (deceased), Colin and David.

Her parents were Jewish, her father by birth and her mother after having converted to Judaism prior to their marriage. As the political situation in Germany worsened, the decision was made to send their only children, Ellen and her older sister, Marianne, to England via a movement known as Kindertransport. On July 26, 1939, the sisters left on a train bound for St. Mary's, a private boarding school in Horam, Sussex, England. Ellen was 14 years old and didn't speak English.

The sisters worked and studied in England for eight years. In 1947, they sailed for five days aboard the RMS Aquitania from Southampton, England, to Halifax, Nova Scotia. They boarded a train, entered the United States by way of St. Albans, Vt., and reunited with their parents in New York City on March 27, 1947.

Ellen became a naturalized citizen of the United States on Aug. 5, 1952.

Ellen's love of skiing took her to Denver, where she worked for Burroughs Corp. She met a man on the ski slopes at Berthoud Pass. She was having trouble with her boot binding. The man who came to help her was a former ski patrolman in Wisconsin and a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy on leave for a couple of days from his base near San Francisco, Theodore G. Baldwin. They were married in Denver at the City and County Building on June 22, 1953.

When her husband left on the USS Essex aircraft carrier for the Korean War on Dec. 1, 1953, Ellen returned to her sister's home on Staten Island, N.Y. Their son, Michael Wendel Baldwin, was born in New York while Ted was at sea.

In 1955, when Ted was discharged from the service, he joined his family's business as the sales manager for J.A. Baldwin Manufacturing Co. in Kearney.

Their second child, Julie Fern Baldwin, was born in Kearney.

Ellen and family joined St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kearney, where she was confirmed on Nov. 24, 1957.

Ellen lost Ted in a United Airline crash on Dec. 8, 1972, along with her brother-in-law, Arnold Ender. In 1976, she moved to Lincoln where she resided until her death.

Her hobbies included skiing (until 2007), tennis, bridge, knitting, crossword puzzles, reading and extensive travel.

Ellen dearly loved spending time with her six grandchildren, all of whom share her love of skiing and snowboarding.

Mike and Julie remember their parents saying, "When you go to college …" not "If you go …" so they encouraged their mother to finish her degree, also. Ellen returned to classes at age 65 at then-Kearney State College and graduated in 1991 cum laude with a bachelor of arts in German, a minor in French and a German translator certificate.

The company her husband worked so hard to build was sold by the family in 1981. Ellen used proceeds of the sale to fund the now spent Ellen W. Baldwin Foundation and the ongoing Theodore G. Baldwin Foundation.

Her love of community and philanthropy did not stop there.

She volunteered to help Nebraska Repertory Theatre Board of Advisers; Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Capital Campaign Committee and Dean's Club; The Carson Circle Carson Society; Friends of Opera; Lincoln Children's Zoo Board of Directors and was a founding member of the Board of Trustees; Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and Guild; Sheldon Art Gallery; Museum of Nebraska Art Board; Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation Board of Trustees; Friends of Lied; University of Nebraska President's Club; University of Nebraska at Kearney Foundation; Northland College Presidents Club (her husband's alma mater in Ashland, Wis.); Nebraska Wesleyan University; Lincoln Community Playhouse, including a non-speaking role in Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"; Lincoln Public School Foundation Trustee; St. Matthew's Episcopal Church altar guild; member of P.E.O. Chapter CS; Copper Kettle; RAK (Random Acts of Kindness group); Shrine Auxiliary; S.A.F.E.; and Wednesday Book Club. In Kearney, she was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church altar guild, a Cub Scout den mother and a Campfire Girl leader.

Special awards she received included 1983 Kearney State College Distinguished Service Award, 1983 Kearney Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and 2002 Nebraska Repertory Theater Hall of Fame Inductee.

Ellen's extended family joined her at Lake Geneva, Wis., to celebrate her 80th birthday in July 2005.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, Jay Schleichkorn; brother-in-law, Arnie Ender; and sister-in-law, Colleen Ender.

Burial was in the Kearney Cemetery, Kearney, NE.
