Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until September 14, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Melvin Bailey.

Lee served as a Soundman, 2nd Class on the minesweeper U.S.S. YMS-409, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided at 21 Linnet Street, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war. He had previously served in Company G, 21st Regiment, New York National Guard. He enlisted in the Navy in August, 1943.

He was a graduate of John Marshall High School and worked in Kodak Park prior to the war. He received his naval training at the Sampson Naval Training Center, Key West, Florida.

Lee was declared "Missing In Action" in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras during what was called the "Great Atlantic Hurricane" in 1944 when the YMS-409, a 136-foot (41 m) long minesweeper, sunk during the storm.

This hurricane also claimed the U.S.S. Warrington (DD-383) and the Coast Guard Cutters Bedloe and Jackson.
