James is the eldest son of Russell Wyatt and Jane Blair. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army, 37th Tennessee Infantry in 1862. He served with the Army of Tennessee, fighting in and surviving every campaign and major engagement from after Shiloh to the end of the war. James even took part in the disasterous battles of Franklin, TN and Nashville, TN in the winter of 1864-65 and survived to tell about it. His regiment became notable for holding on to Shy's Hill at Nashville against the overwhelming Federal onslaught. James marched with what was left of the Army of Tennessee to North Carolina where they engaged Sherman for the last time in the Greensboro/Bentonville area. The army surrendered there and was paroled.

Other children include: Willie, John, and Ed.
