Dan was the only child of Samuel Ross and Elsa M. (Johnson) Young. Born in Manchester, Iowa at the home of his grandparents, Iowa State Senator Daniel Hiel and Laura Belle (Robb) Young, he was raised in Cincinnati, OH and attended Western Hills High School and then the University of Cincinnati for two years. With his deep, booming voice, he was a natural for the radio industry and he started as a part-time announcer with WONE in Dayton, Ohio. After the American News Company, with which he had been associated for more than 16 years, closed its doors, Dan went to work full-time as a newscaster for WONE. In February of 1960, he returned to Cincinnati as News Editor for WSAI and in 1962 he was appointed News Director. In 1966 Dan started with WKRC in Cincinnati and became the host of the popular program, "Party Line". Throughout his career, Dan was recognized many times for his work and under his leadership, the WSAI news department received the Ohio Bar Association Annual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Jurisprudence and Law Enforcement three years in a row. He was also recognized several times for his public support of the Cincinnati Police Department. He was also an honorary member of the North College Hill Police Department. Dan had also been associated with both the St. Louis Police Department and Fire Department in his younger years.
