Steven Wilmot died about three weeks after incurring injuries from a fall while investigating an arson fire in Springfield, IL. Wilmot was a 15-year veteran and was highly thought of among his co-workers. Wilmot and four other Illinois firefighters were honored with gold badges during the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony in May 2001.


Steven Wilmot, 47, of Springfield died at St. John's Hospital. He was born in Macomb, the son of Dwight M. and Jacqueline Woods Wilmot. He married Sandra Bolander in 1979 in Effingham.

Mr. Wilmot was a captain in the Springfield Fire Department, where he had worked for 15 years. He was an Illinois state certified fire investigator. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, Fire Fighters Local 37, Knights of Columbus 364, and the International Association of Arson Investigators. He was assistant den master for Cub Scout Pack 2 and a U.S. Army veteran and served as captain in the Illinois National Guard.

Survivors: wife, Sandra; a son, Jacob Wilmot, at home; two daughters, Jill Wilmot of Springfield and Jamie Wilmot, at home; parents, Dwight and Jacqueline Wilmot of Chatham; two brothers, Tim Wilmot of Billings, Mont., and Gary Wilmot of Chatham; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
