RICHARD GARRETT

"Dick" and "Richy"
Richard Garrett ("Dick" and "Richy"), age 73, of New Castle, DE, died on Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, on December 14, 1933, Mr. Garrett was the son of the late Emma and Nelson Garrett. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and, following his honorable discharge from military service, returned home to the United States to marry his "soulmate," Grace Ann Watson, of Langhorne, PA, with whom he would share 52 years of marriage, until her death on August 27, 2006. A refrigeration mechanic by profession, Mr. Garrett worked for Westinghouse and Amstel Refrigeration for several years before accepting a position with the State of Delaware at the Emily P. Bissell Hospital. He greatly enjoyed spending time with the close-knit community of Bissell staff members, especially during their summer picnics at Lums Pond. He retired from the state after 20 years of service. He had been a member of Stahl Post #30, American Legion for many years. Mr. Garrett was a born storyteller and would often delight family and friends with tales of "the old neighborhood" in Brooklyn and of the interesting sites and people he encountered during military leave in Japan. He was also an incredibly talented cook whose chili won raves from all who tasted it. A devoted family man, above all, he would want to be remembered as a person of a simple, honest and compassionate nature who tried always to set a good example for his beloved children and grandchildren.

Mr. Garrett was lost without Grace following her death and will now join her in eternity and in peace. He was also preceded in death by 4 siblings. He is survived by their 3 sons, Robert R. Garrett and his wife, Kelley S., of New Castle; Richard W. Garrett and his wife, Ellen M., of Smyrna; and Brian K. Garrett of New Castle; his brother, Thomas Garrett, of Stanton; 8 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

A service will be held at 2 pm, on Tuesday, June 12, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice House, 261 Chapman Road, Stockton Bldg., Ste. 100, Newark, DE 19702; or to Wilmington Manor Fire Company, PO Box 631, New Castle, DE 19720.
