U.S. Congressman. Successful in agricultural and mercantile pursuits, he served as a Captain in Company A, 4th Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he settled in Virginia in 1865 and was a delegate to the Virginia constitutional convention, (1867-68). Upon the readmission of the State of Virginia to representation he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, serving (1870-71). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to Maine, served as member of the Maine State House of Representatives in 1888 and engaged in agricultural pursuits until death at age 67.
