Maine Governor. Born in Belfast, Maine, he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1823, studied law and practiced law in Belfast, Maine. He was prominent in promoting the public-school system of Maine and while in college he published a small volume of poems, plus authored Political Illustrations of the Athenaeum Gallery. He was president of the Whig National Convention in 1852, when elected the 23rd Governor of Maine, serving (1853-55). After leaving the office, he served as a trustee for Bowdoin College and also served as a member of the Maine Historical Society. He died at age 75 in Belfast, Maine.
