U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced to practice law in Portland, Maine. He was member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1838-40), served in the Maine State Senate (1842-45) Maine Sate Secretary, (1845-50) and a bank commissioner, newspaper editor in 1856. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was member of the peace convention prior the Civil War held in Washington, D.C., in 1861. On August 3, 1861, he appointed Second Auditor of the Treasury, by President Lincoln and served in the following administrations until his death at age 69.
