U.S. Congressman. Born in Buckfield, Maine, he was successful in mercantile pursuits and was appointed Buckfield Postmaster in 1861. During the Civil War, he was Captain of Company C, 23rd Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he settled in Augusta, Georgia, in 1866, was cashier of a bank and the Georgia State Superintendent of Education. Upon the readmission of Georgia to representation he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving (1868-69). After his term, he was Postmaster of Augusta, (1870-82) and delegate to the Republican National Conventions, (1872, 1876, 1880). Returning to Buckfield, Maine, in 1882, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, the insurance business, the manufacture of brushes and was a member of the Maine State Senate in 1901. He died at age 74 in Buckfield, Maine.
