Irving W. Allen
Irving Wager Allen, 78, of 339 Dewey St., bookkeeper and head accountant at Ben Mont, where he had served 45 years before his retirement several years ago, died Sunday at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in North Hoosick, N.Y., June 4, 1889, a son of John and Mary Jane (Nesbitt) Allen. He had attended North Hoosick schools and was graduated from Bliss Business College in North Adams, Mass. He became affiliated with Bennington Wax Paper Co., which later became Ben Mont, soon after graduation. At the time of his retirement several years ago, he was recognized for his outstanding record of service there.
A sports enthusiast, he was a champion bowler and in league competition had often emerged as the winner. Fishing and hunting also were among his favorites, and he was interested in baseball. He also was a past president of the Southern Vermont Boating Club.
Mr. Allen was a past noble grand of Stark Lodge, 100F, and active in this unit for many years. He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
His wife, the former Marjorie Dunham of Bennington, died in 1956. Survivors include two sons, John D. Allen of Springfield, Vt. and Robert W. Allen of Bennington; one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie L. Wade of Bennington; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild; three brothers, William Allen of Cambridge, N.Y., David Allen of North Adams, Mass., and Harry Allen of North Hoosick; one sister, Mrs. Marcia Simmons of North Bennington.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Melvin R. McGaughey, First Methodist Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and evening.
