US Congressman. Elected as a Republican to represent Maine's 3rd District in the Sixty-third Congress, he served from March 1913 until his death in office. An 1887 graduate of Maine's Colby College, he had an early start in politics; he was elected to a term in the State House of Representatives (1889) and was Parliamentary Clerk under Speaker Thomas Reed in the Fifty-first US Congress (1889 to 1891). During that time he completed post-graduate study at the Boston University Law School and was admitted to the bar, and after leaving Congress became a practicing attorney in his native Skowhegan. From 1903 to 1905 he was a member of the State Senate, serving as its President in the last year. Goodwin died suddenly at 50 in Portland, Maine, less than three months after taking his seat in the US House. John A. Peters was elected to complete his term.
