Sam Earley Heffinger, 93, of 150 Landreth Road, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Moses Cone Hospital.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2011, at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with Chaplain Paul Lewis officiating. Military rites will be provided by Rockingham County Honor Guard and North Carolina National Guard.

Mr. Heffinger was born December 8, 1917, in Spray, NC, to the late Frank Thomas and Betty Lou Carter Heffinger. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of WWII, serving in the 1st Marine Division, also known as the "Old Breed", 5th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, George Company. His service included the South and Central Pacific at Guadalcanal, Cape Glaucester and Peleliu. The Purple Heart was awarded to him after being wounded at Peleliu. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Following his military service, Sam worked as a carpenter, farmer and clock smith. In 1975, he bought the Stokesdale Railroad Depot, moved it outside of Madison and spent five years remodeling it into a home for his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, India Williams Heffinger; granddaughter, Samantha Orr; seven brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include daughter, Twinkle Orr and husband, Mike, of Germanton; son, Rudy Heffinger and wife, Mechita, of Madison; grandsons, C. Matthew Orr, of Madison, and Travis Heffinger, of Greensboro; step-granddaughter, Deidra Jones; step-great-grandson, Brody Jones and sister, Vera (Bea) Dew, of Martinsville, VA.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the home of Rudy Heffinger, 160 Landreth Road, Madison.
