He was born On August 11, 1893 at Vronding, Denmark, a son of Peter and Maren Barenthsen and spent his early years there. He and the family immigrated to the U.S. in April of 1906 and settled at Yankton, SD. In April of 1907 the family came to the Powers Lake area and homesteaded east of there. In 1914 he began farming on his won in Garness Township, Burke County, and he married Louise Thomsen on Dec. 6, 1916 near Lunds Valley, ND. She died in 1942 and he then married Carla Holst in 1947 and they continued to farm in Garness Twp. until retiring and moving into Powers Lake in 1959. He was a writer for the Kenmare Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for many years and also served as an inspector for the Burke County A.S.C. office at Bowbells. He served on the High View District School Board and also the Garness Twp. Board for many years. He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Powers Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Carla; son, Alvin of Powers Lake; daughter, Mrs. Clifton (Harriette) Jorgenson of' Kenmare; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Fred of Powers Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and a daughter, Lola.
