Mr. James Benton Flippen age 90 of Mt. Airy passed away Tuesday June 28, 2011 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Mr. Flippen was born July 18, 1920 in Surry County to the late Samuel and Luticia Williams Flippen, he was retired from Ballston Knitting and was a member of Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Flippen was a world renowned fiddle player and was known for his love of old time music and the love for his friends that he played with. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law Larry and Ellen Flippen of Mt. Airy, three grandsons Jason Flippen and wife Tera, William Flippen and Nicholas Flippen all of Mt. Airy and one sister Gracie Tolbert of Mt. Airy. In addition to his parents Mr. Flippen was preceded in death by his wife Hallie Lois Arrington Flippen, two sisters Ada Tolbert and Roxie Tolbert and by four brothers Elder Sam Flippen, Elder Grover Flippen, Elder Roy Flippen and Claude Flippen. Funeral services will be held Saturday July 2, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with services conducted by Elder Vance Jones, Elder Rodney Marshall, Elder Scottie Marshall and Mr. Paul Brown with burial to follow in the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night 6 to 8 P.M. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane Suite 200 Mt. Airy, NC. 27030.
