Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Maryland, he was first commissioned into military service during the Mexican War. Assigned as a First Lieutenant with the 15th Infantry Regiment, he would serve with distinction during the war and would be brevetted to the rank of Major by war's end. Returning to civilian life, he moved to California in 1850 and became involved in politics. In 1854, he was elected to the California state assembly. He also made unsuccessful campaigns for the United States House of Representatives in 1854, Governor of California in 1858, and California State Attorney General in 1860. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Bowie was commissioned to the rank of Colonel and assigned command of the 5th California Volunteer Infantry Regiment, serving until he was mustered out in 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services".
