Horace B Miller was born on Horse Prairie, south of Valparaiso, Indiana, in 1848. He moved with his mother to Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1855, where he lived at the beginning of the Civil War.

Horace enlisted as a Private in Captain Warren Beckwith's command, Co C 4th Iowa Cavalry, on 29 Feb 1864 at the age of 18. He mustered in the same day. He mustered out 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia, after a service of 1 year, 5 months, 9 days. Horace Miller was connected to one of the most brave, patriotic and fearless cavalry regiments of the Union army. In 1883 he united with Chaplain Brown Post No. 106, Indiana. At the time of his death he had just been elected Post Commander, but died before his installation.

After his discharge, he returned to Valparasio, and followed the painter's trade. On 7 Nov 1871 he married Velma White in Porter County, Indiana. Census records indicate they had three children. Two known children are Ed Miller born 1874 and Clara G Miller born 1876.

In 1892 Horace was appointed baliff of the circuit court and for years was the baliff of both the superior and circuit courts.

Horace died from a stroke at the age of 68 years.
