Lillian E. Bast, age 86, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2000, at Meriter Park Hospital, Madison. She was born August 31, 1914, the daughter of Alex Mauer and Emma Mauer Borchardt. She was united in marriage to Karl Bast on May 25, 1938, and they celebrated 57 years together before his death in 1995. She was dedicated to her husband's ministry and served beside him in three parishes in South Dakota before moving to Madison, where they spent 26 fruitful years at Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church. After their retirement in 1980, they enjoyed extensive traveling and their home in the Arboretum, which they shared with sister-in-law Dora Kuehner. Lillian was preceded in death by her daughter, Karla Kindschi; her beloved husband, the Reverend Karl G. Bast; and her brothers, Harold and Edward Borchardt. She is survived by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Maryann Bast; her brother Herbert Borchardt; her sister-in-law, Dora Kuehner; four granddaughers and a great-granddaughter. We will all miss her kindness, compassion, and warm smiles. Friends and family may call at the SCHROEDER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, March 23, 2000, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. at EASTSIDE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2310 Independence Lane, with lunch to follow in the fellowship hall. The Reverand Glen F. Schmiege will officiate. She will be buried beside her husband in a private service at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Milwaukee. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Bast School Endowment Fund or Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church.
