NATHANIEL MITCHELL YOUNG: was the first white man to settle in the area of Knox County, Ohio. In 1803 he lived among the Indians. He was a skilled blacksmith and made axe's and tomahawks for the Indians. The Indians called him "Axe man." Excerpt from Beers 1895 "History of Ohio."
Nathaniel was instrumental in encouraging the Mitchell, Young, Lewis and Douglas families to relocate to Knox County, Ohio from their original homes in Morris County, New Jersey. All four of these families, from New Jersey, had family members who fought in the Revolutionary War as part of the New Jersey Militia. Members of all four families are buried in this cemetery as well as in nearby Fredericktown.
