Son of Capt. Archibald Sampson RoBards(1797-1862) and Amanda Carpenter RoBards(1808-1865), John Lewis was a life-long friend of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and a prominent citizen of Hannibal, Missouri.

He was an attorney, who attended the University of Missouri and graduated from Jefferson School of Law in Kentucky in 1861. Married to Sarah Crump Helm in 1862, they had seven children. Three not linked below were: Jennie Beverly (d.8-7-1864), Nannie Carpenter (d.12-16-1865), and Lewis RoBards (d.8-22-1875).

A daughter not linked was Mary Logan Robards (1862-1927) who married Elisha Ashcraft Richardson (1860-1913) of Louisville, KY. Their children were Sara (1890-1902) and Elisha Ashcraft Richardson, Jr. (1902- ) who married Hester ? and was an attorney in Louisville. Mary and her husband are buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville.
