Leo "Keith" Brown passed away peacefully at home in Idaho Falls on July 7, 1999, surrounded by his wife, family and friends.

Keith was born on Sept. 22, 1928, in Burns, Ore., the third child of Florence and Clinton Brown. His brothers Jack and Bud came before him and his sister Phyllis and brother Rich followed after. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Nampa where he graduated from high school in 1947.

His parents were avid outdoors people, so he grew up fishing and spearing salmon with them in the meadows of Bear Valley Creek, rockhounding with them in Idaho' s deep canyons and high deserts, and hunting big game and birds with them throughout its spectacular mountains and plains.

During the Korean War he served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge and saw a good part of the world. But he returned to Idaho, where he worked in McCall as a Forest Service smokejumper before and after the war, making over 50 parachute jumps on wildfires in Idaho's central wilderness.

He and Carlene S. Tracey fell in love in Boise and married in Idaho Falls on May 28, 1954. They raised and educated four sons, Steve, Pat, Bob and Tom. They lost another, Ronnie, during infancy.

Keith earned his degree in business administration from Idaho State University in 1957 and they moved to Idaho Falls where he lived and worked as a federal investigator for 29 years until he retired in 1986, with a short stint in Seattle during the 1970's.

Among other things, Keith was a Salmon River camper, a Plaza Lanes pool-shooter, a dedicated golfer and an avid runner of wild rivers. But most of all he was a loving, gentle husband and faithful companion to his wife; a caring father and integrity-filled example to his sons; and a trusted confidant and thoughtful advisor to his extended family and friends. All honor him; all will miss him deeply.

Survivors include his wife, Carlene of Idaho Falls; four sons, Steve (Ginny) of Idaho Falls, Pat (Annette) of Idaho Falls, Bob (Debbie) of Seattle, and Tom of Idaho Falls; sister, Phyllis (Rex) Swindell of Boise; mother-in-law, Ruth Westergard of Iona; sister-in-laws, Darlene Brown of Fairfield, Calif., Marlene Brown of Tampa, Fla., Joyce Dodge of Ucon, and Judy Patterson of Idaho Falls; six grandchildren, Nate, Jess, Mackenzie, Brayden, Jeremy (Charlette) and Tillman; three great-grandchildren, Brittanie, Dillon and Jason; and many nieces and nephews. His parents, a son and three brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ride Ave., in Idaho Falls. The family will meet with friends and relatives at the funeral home Monday evening between 7 and 8 p.m. and for one hour before services. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family expresses thanks to Dr. Kevin Mulvey and his staff for their fine, dedicated work and remarkable compassion. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Community Hospice, 840 East Elva, Idaho Falls, ID 83401. Paid Tribute
