Joseph James Cheeseman (1843-1896) was the son of Rev. John H. Cheeseman (27 OCT 1817 - 20 JUN 1859) and Martha _______; and grandson of Abraham (1803- ) and Margaret Cheeseman. Joseph James Cheeseman was inaugurated President of Liberia, West Africa on the 4th of January 1892 in Monrovia. He died in Monrovia while in office and was succeeded by Vice-President William David Coleman (1842-1908).
Inscription on monument: "Erected In the memory of Rev. JOSEPH JAS. CHEESMAN. FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE LIBERIAN BAPTIST MISSIONARY CONVENTION, APPOINTED APRIL 17th AND SERVED IN THIS POSITION TO HIS DEATH NOV. 12th, 1896."
