US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Virginia's 6th District in the US House of Representatives from 1953 until 1972. Following service in Europe with the US Air Force during World War II (he was a bomber pilot and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross), he attained his law degree from the University of Virginia. He vacated his Congressional seat to serve as Supreme Justice of Virginia. Poff was on a short list of candidates President Nixon was considering to fill the vacancy left by the death of Hugo Black on the US Supreme Court in 1971. The position later went to Lewis Powell.
