Gershom Bulkeley, son of Rev. Peter Bulkeley and his second wife Grace (Chetwood) Bulkeley, was born on December 6, 1636 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts. There he married on October 26, 1659 Sarah Chauncey, daughter of Harvard University president Charles Chauncey and his wife Catherine Eyre.

Gershom Bulkeley had training as a medical doctor, minister, and chemist, and functioned in each of these capacities in Hartford County, Connecticut, and lived out his life in Glastonbury where his daughter Dorothy was married to Thomas Treat.

Gershom and Sarah had 4 sons and 2 daughters from 1660-1679. Sarah died on June 3, 1699 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut and Gershom died on December 2, 1713 in Glastonbury. Both are buried in Wethersfield Village Cemetery.

Of rare abilities, excellent in learning, master of many languages, exquisite in his skill in divinity, physic and law and a most exemplary and Christian life.
