Frank J. and Bertie Mae James
Frank J. James, 78, of Centertown, and his wife, Bertie Mae James, 72, were killed Wednesday, September 18 , when the car they were in collided with a coal truck east of Madisonville, the Kentucky State Police said. Mr. James was turning left onto Kentucky 70 when his car was hit by an empty coal truck heading east on Kentucky 70 at the intersection with Kentucky 85.
James was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hopkins County deputy coroner, and his wife was dead upon arrival at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
The truck driver, Richard Bivins, 33, of Grangertown, was treated for minor injuries at Regional Medical Center and released. No charges were filed.
Mrs. James was born in Ohio County [Hopkins County], the daughter of Frank and Della Neal. She was a housewife.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Betty Sue Brigance of Centertown and Mrs. Vanetta Hagan of Owensboro; five grandchildren;; seven great-grand-children; four brothers, Roy and Bill Neal, both of Owensboro, R.C. Neal of Fayetteville, N.C., and Albert Neal of Hartford; and four sisters, Thelma Brown and Irene Tichenor, both of Centertown. Beatrice Clark of Hartford and Audrey Morris of Island; two uncles, Alf and Quincy Brashear; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. James was born in Ohio County, son of Joe and Martha Ellen "Mattie" Hopper James. He was a retired coal miner and farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Betty Sue Brigance of Centertown and Mrs. Vanetta Hagan of Owensboro; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Ruby Jo Vance of Illinois; sister-in-law, Mrs. Tiny James; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were 2 p.m., Saturday at Duke Funeral Home, Centertown with Rev. Claud Smith officiating. Burial was in Centertown Cemetery.
