Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". A lawyer and judge by profession, he rose to become the Chief Justice of the Illinois State Supreme Court, serving from 1897 to his death in 1901.
