He was born on March 9, 1766 at the 'Hermitage', Paramus (present day Ho-Ho-Kus), Bergen County, New Jersey. He was the eldest son of Jacques Marc Prevost (1736 Geneva-1781 Jamaica, W.I.) and Theodosia Bartow (1746 Shrewsbury, New Jersey-1794 New York City). Theodosia married secondly, Aaron Burr, Vice President of the U.S.A. John Bartow Prevost was married on February 5, 1799 to Frances Ann Smith who was the daughter of Samuel Stanhope Smith (1751-1819), 7th President of Princeton University. Frances was the granddaughter of John Witherspoon (1723-1794), one of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence.
