Fontaine was a child of delicate health according to his father. He was the light of his father's life after "Fonny's" mother passed away; and in her absence, Fonny continued to be mothered by his "Aunt Kate", Mrs. Catherine C. Thompson. Fontaine's life was taken suddenly from him on a summer holiday while he was visiting the farm of his uncle & aunt, John & Alice Young, and members of the Hutcheson family at "Mt. Airy", Mecklenburg County, VA. First buried at "Mt. Airy", his remains were exumed and brought back by his father's direction to lie with his mother in Glenwood Cemetery.
