Mrs. Johnston Well Known Local Lady Dies Thursday;
Death of Widow of D. W. Johnston Occurs at Decatur; Funeral Saturday:
Death claimed the life of one of this city's most highly respected women at 12:40 o'clock Thursday morning when Mrs. Sarah E. Johnston, 75, widow of the late D. W. Johnston, for a number of years President of the Farmers National Bank, passed away in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cleona J. Morris at Decatur. Mrs. Johnston had been ill eight weeks, suffering from myocarditis. Ten days ago she was removed to her daughter's home from the home of her son, Roy A. Johnson where she became ill.
Mrs. Johnston was born in North Carolina, September 5, 1859, the daughter of J.A. and Mary E. Utter Wilson. When a child she came to Illinois with her parents, the family locating in Christian County, and it was in this vicinity that Mrs. Johnston was reared. She was united in marriage in 1879 to D. W. Johnston, a pioneer resident of Christian County, and their entire married life was spent in and near this city. After retiring from farming and moving into the city, Mr. Johnston was identified with several successful business enterprises and he was for a number of years president of the Farmers National Bank. His death occurred in 1919.
Of a pleasant and amiable disposition, Mrs. Johnston was loved by all who knew her. She was always ready to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate.
Mrs. Johnston was an active member of the First Methodist Church. She also was affiliated with Haslemere Chapter 221, Pow Wow Club and several other organizations.
Surviving are her two children, Mrs. Cleona J. Morris of Decatur and Roy A. Johnston of this city, clerk of the state appellate court. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Susan C. Micenheimer, who resides south of this city; one brother, J. A. Wilson of Monmouth, Kansas and four grandchildren: Attorney D. W. Johnston and Miss Anna Lou Johnston, both of this city and Misses Sarah E. and Roberta June Morris, of Decatur. She is also survived by one niece, Miss Clara Johnston of Chicago, who formerly made her home with Mrs. Johnston.
Funeral services will be held at 10o'clock Saturday morning in the home of her son at the corner of First and Madison Streets. Rev. Harry A. Cochran, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the mausoleum in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The body was removed to the Roy A. Johnston residence Thursday afternoon from the B. E. Bulpitt Funeral Home.
