Luther Edward Chaplain was born 16 March 1871 in Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland to Jeremiah and Malinda (Lydia) Chapline. Luther was five years old when his father died. The following year his mother married William Frew, the widower of Malinda's twin sister, Matilda, who had died a few months prior to Jeremiah in 1876.
By 1880 Luther and his family had moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania. The 1870 U.S. Federal Census revealed that Luther's mother could not read or write which might explain why he and his brothers spelled their surname differently from their father.
In 1891 Luther married Susannah Zimmerman. They had fourteen children.
According to the U.S. Federal Census Luther worked as a steel molder in 1900. In the 1910, 1920 and 1940 Census his occupation was listed as farmer and in 1930 he was a coal miner.
Susannah died in 1923. Luther married Lydia Gindlesperger in 1932.
Luther died in 24 June 1946 at age 75.
