Local artist, Margaret Curry of Victoria passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2011. She was born in Cheney, Kansas to Harvey C. Ausherman and Grace Matson Ausherman on September 3, 1918 and graduated from Cheney Kansas High School in 1936. During her high school years she was piano accompanist for the music department (having started music lesions at an early age) all glee clubs, soloist, and music events, winning 2nd place in piano at state events. Margaret went to Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas with the idea of becoming a commercial artist. (Her grandmother, who lived with Margaret, had oil pictures hanging in the Kansas Capital.

Margaret married John T. Curry in 1939 and traveled with him on pipelines during the beginning of World War II, and then when he enlisted in the Navy she went back to Wichita where she worked for Boeing as a junior illustrator in their art department. She later joined him moving where the government sent him in the Navy. The war ended and they came back to Texas settling in Austin in real estate. Depression set in and they moved to Victoria, John to work for DuPont and she to teach. She started in Presbyterian Day School (2yrs) moving to VISD at Wood Hi. She had no education classes in college so she traveled to San Marcos to get a BS in education, teaching during this time (20 + years) grade 5-8 music and of course art. She taught at Wood Hi, Guadalupe, William Offer, mainly 5th but art and music as subjects during years she was teaching art or music somewhere in all this she was certified to teach art and music. She ended up with her love (5th grade) at Aloe (20 total years.)
On the back of her diploma at State, Dr. Nolle had written that she could teach art at any level after teaching in VISD. She taught watercolor painting at open door and all levels of art._______years for Lifetime Learning.
She was a lifetime member of Retired Teachers Association, a member of International Partners and teachers (IPAT), China painters of Texas, Victoria Art League (past president of Metropolitan Art League which is now Victoria Art League. Honorary member of Order of Eastern Star, honorary member of Victoria Quilt Guild , was president of the Victoria Garden Club when the first rose garden was put in the park, started our local China Painting Club as 1st president, belonged to Golden Crescent porcelain Art Club. She played piano for the Morning Study Club and also her Sunday School Class.
John and she were very active in the First Methodist Church, playing piano for Sunday school class for several years. Her main love in later life was Bridge.
Margaret Grace Curry was predeceased by her spouse, John T. Curry and is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Hawkes and spouse, David Hawkes, and Mary Jane Cope, and spouse, Rick Cope.
Margaret leaves behind five grandchildren, Michelle Seymour and spouse, Joel Seymour, Michael Braeuer and spouse, Christin Braeuer, Brian Cope, Brenda Hawkes Tucker and spouse, Charlie Tucker and Cassie Cope Bruster and spouse, Luke Bruster.
She will also be missed by her great grandchildren; Jordan Seymour Snyder, and brother; Gabriel Seymour, Carmen Tucker and sisters; Isa and Peyton, brother; Riley, Salem Grace Braeuer and Avery Grace Bruster.
Visitation will be held on 6-8 PM on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Rosewood Funeral Chapels
Funeral services will be at 2 PM on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Marilyn Roeder and Mrs. Curry's son-in-law, Rev. Rick Cope officiating.
Interment with graveside services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
