U.S. Senator. He attended Princeton University and engaged in sugar production in Louisiana, plus the cultivation of various agricultural products. He was a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives, (1904-18). In 1918, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert F. Broussard, serving until 1921. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was president of the sugar manufacturing company in the Lake Long Drainage District, Louisiana, until his death at age 74. U.S. Congressman James Edward Gay, was his grandfather.
