He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1843 with high honors 2nd in his class.
He was the principle of Gilford Acadeny in Laconia and admitted to the Bar in 1848. He then lived in California for a year and 4 months in Central America. He returned to Manchester and opened a law office. In 1852 Joseph C Emerson, owner of the Daily Mirror requested he take charge of the Daily Mirror Editorial Department. Fortunately for Mr. Clarke, Mr Emerson became "financially embarrassed" and Clarke bought the Newspaper. His newspaper continued to florish and he merged several newspapers. Since these additions to the Mirror it now has increased the daily and weekly paper by 3 times. It now has the largest circulation than any other class publication in New England outside of Boston.
Mr. Clarke was generous with high school students and gave monetary gifts for speaking and reading. The result of his generosity improved reading and speaking in the public schools. He was also involved with Boards of Directors with Banks and other institutions.
In 1872 on the advise of his physicians he abstained from all business for several months and toured Great Britian, France and Germany
He married Susan Greeley Moulton on July 29, 1852, they had two sons, Arthur Eastman born 5/13/1854 and William Cogswell born 3/17/1856.
Susan died May 10, 1885 and he later married Olive Rand, date of marriage unknown, they had no children.
He is buried with 2 wives, 2 children, Brother William Cosgwell Clark and family and Sister Dr. Julia Clarke.
In the book of the Clarke family history his death is attributed to "rheumatisn of the heart"
