George Whitney, Jr., 81, of Phoenix, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital, from complications arising from stroke, heart attack, and cancer.

He was born in his parents' home on October 25, 1921 in North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The family later moved to a farm near the small town of Hancock. As a young man, he sailed with the merchant marine fleet on the Great Lakes. In World War II, he served in the 377th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division and was wounded in December, 1944, during the American assault on the fortifications at Metz, in northern France. After the war, he pursued his passion for history at the University of Wisconsin, where he received bachelor and master's degrees.
In 1949, he began a career as a high school history teacher that would last almost thirty years. His area of special expertise was American history, especially the Civil War period.

He is survived by Jean, his wife of 51 years; sons John (wife, Maria) and Brian (wife, Sherri); daughter, Lisa; grandchildren, Thomas, Hannah, Jessica and Philip; and brothers Ward (wife Irene) and Walter. A short service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18th at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 Cave Creek Road. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, March 24 at 6:00 pm at the Kerr Cultural Center, 6110 N. Scottsdale Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
