Death notice:
Death of L. W. Williams
Yesterday morning after a severe illness, Loring Wallace Williams died at Nevada City, aged about 42 years. He was a native of Wisconsin, as we understand. Deceased came to this county at an early day with his father and during the earlier years of his residence here was actively engaged in mining, handling the pick and shovel. He soon turned his attention to literary pursuits, however, and to the study of the law. In these he made rapid progress. Soon after his admission to the bar, he took high rank among the lawyers of Nevada County, among the lawyers who have since earned for themselves national reputations. Wallace Williams, as he was familiarly called, was felt in his profession, and his ability was recognized by all with whom he came in contact. He had a stern and unyielding will, great industry, untiring perseverance, and a large mind. We believe that he never held office. Last year he ran for State Senator against Hon. M. P. O'Connor. Williams was defeated by less than one hundred votes and by the only man in this county, in our opinion, who could have beaten him. The contest was a warm and able one on both sides. The death of such a man is a public loss. Deceased leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss. Peace to his ashes. [Grass Valley Union, Feb. 11, 1874]
