John Alfred Veloz, 49, of Barstow, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001. John was a member of the Barstow Church of Christ and a 1969 graduate of Barstow High School.

John entered the United States Army in February 1971, and received his basic training including 16 weeks of advanced infantry training in Fort Ord. During his specialized training he received the machine gun expert medal in addition to the pistol, rifle, and grenade marksmanship medals. While at the Army base at Fort Benning, Ga., John received advanced individual training at the famous 82nd Airborne Training School.

John worked for Santa Fe Railway as a freight car repairman for 22 years. He enjoyed coaching and announcing East Barstow Little League games.

John is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nancy; two sons, Nathan and Aaron of Barstow; daughter Priscilla of Barstow; mother, Claudia Veloz Barragan of Barstow; sister Jennie of Ridgecrest; five brothers, David of Ontario, Manuel of Garden Grove, Richard of Las Flores, Paul and Louie of Barstow; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Juan.

Viewing is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and burial is at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California.
