Louisiana Governor. During the War of 1812, he served as a Major in the 16th Regiment of the Louisiana Militia and was at the Battle of New Orleans. After the war, he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, (1816-24) and a member of the Louisiana State Senate, in 1829. In 1830, when Governor Derbigny died he was appointed as a Jeffersonian Republican, the 8th Governor of Louisiana, serving until 1831. While in office, the merchant's insurance company was authorized, the state's first railroad was launched, the seat of government was moved back to New Orleans and a bayou development company and a canal expansion company were both incorporated. After his term, he returned to the Louisiana State Senate and served until his death at age 73.
