Daniel was likely the son of Jacob "B'Gardner" and Nancy Lincoln Lynch. They are last found on the 1850 federal census for Batavia Twp., Clermont Co., OH.

Dan married Margaret Stultz on 12 Mar 1848 in Highland Co, OH. The marriage record lists his name as Daniel S B Gardner. An older brother George was married 17 Aug. 1848, in the same place, by the same justice of the peace.

Daniel & Margaret were the parents of eight children: Elmira, Debbie Jane, John William, twins George W. & Jacob, Isaac, James, and Robert Alexander. Daniel named his sons after his own brothers.

His enlistment record in the union army during the Civil War says Daniel is a farmer, age 41, born Bath Co, KY, light eyes, light hair, fair complexion, height 6'2". His enlistment was dated May 2, 1864 at Ripley OH. He mustered in May 14, 1864 at Gallipolis OH, and served as a private in 172nd Regiment, Ohio National Guard Infantry, Company B. The regiment spent its entire enlistment guarding an important supply depot at Gallipolis. The regiment saw no combat. He was mustered out Sep 3, 1864 at Gallipolis.

1850 Census in Batavia Twp, Clermont Co, OH listed as Danniel S B Gardner with wife Margaret and daughter Almira. Nearby in Batavia Twp. on the census is Jacob B Gardner and wife Nancy, who are likely Daniel's parents.

1860 Census in Jackson Twp, Brown Co., OH as Daniel B. Gardner. He and wife Margaret are literate. They have 2 daughters and 3 sons. Daniel's mother-in-law, Lois Brown Stultz, is also living in Jackson Twp, Brown Co, OH, a widow.

June 1863 Daniel appears on a list of men eligible for war service. He is living in Jackson Twp, Brown Co.,OH

1870 & 1880 Census in Jefferson Twp, Adams Co., OH as Daniel, or Danl Bumgardner. His wife Margaret died between 1865-1870.

In the 1890 special census for surviving soldiers, etc., Daniel's address is listed as Blue Creek, Adams Co., OH

Ohio death record gives place of death as Bloom Twp., Scioto Co., OH but residence as Brush Creek Twp., Scioto Co., and cause of death as catarrh of bowels; occupation farmer. It is my opinion that he actually died in Brush Creek Twp. because he owned 49 acres there, near the Adams Co. line and southwest of Otway.
