John W. Whittington, M.D., age 77 of Knoxville, Tenn., went home to be with "The Big Man" following a brief illness.
"I have entered a tail spin and I cannot pull out I just have to go through it," Dr. Whittington said, on Sunday, April 1, 2007, at home surrounded by loving family and friends. Dr. Whittington was one of the founders of Parkwest Hospital in 1973. He dedicated his life to help preserve life of those in need. His passions were family, friends, excellence, and airplanes.
Prior to his career in medicine, Dr. Whittington served proudly in the United States Air Force, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, La.
Memorials will be proudly accepted in his honor where his grandchildren attend school, at The Episcopal School of Knoxville, 950 Episcopal School Way, Knoxville 37922 and Christian Academy of Knoxville, 529 Academy Way, Knoxville 37921.
Preceded in Death by father, William Miles Whittington; his mother, Virginia B. Whittington; and a brother-in-law, Daylon Daniel.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Maxine B. Whittington; his daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Whittington-Dykes and Michael D. Dykes, M.D., Anne Whittington-Lawrence and Richard P. Lawrence; his grandhildren, John Michael and Taylor Whittington Dykes, Whitney Ann, Ashley Morgan, and J. Ray Lawrence; his dear friends, Charles Robert Dudley of Paragould, Lynn Massingale, MD., Harold "" Beal, Ed Knowling, M.D., Pete Cunningham, Mark Frye, Marvin Vickers, M.D., Sam March, M. D.; sister, Nell Daniel; brother, Joe Whittington; special nieces and nephews, Toni Sue Newberry of Dallas, Jennifer Sperry of Paterson, Calif., Buddy Daniel of Canton, Mich., and Joe Daniel of Century, Fla.
Family and friends will meet Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Tennessee Veterans' Cemetery for a 1:30 p.m. committal service with Dr. Jerry Falwell officiating. Pallbearers will be Lynn Massingale, M.D., Harold Beal, Ed Knowling, M.D., Peter Cunningham, Mark Frye, Marvin Vickers, M.D., Steve Marrietta, M.D., Martin Davis, M.D. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Robert Dudley, Aubra Branson, M.D., Toni Kountpious, M.D. of Lafayette, Lal, Richard Gillespie, M.D., Martin Davis, M.D., Carl Gibson, M.D., Harold Crockett, Don Neblett, M.D., Barbara Blevins, president and CAO of Parkwest Hospital and Wayne Heatherly, former administrator of Parkwest Hospital.
A celebration of Life service will be held in Stevens Chapel at 6 p.m., Friday, April 6, followed by receiving of friends. Stevens Mortuary of Knoxville, Tenn. is in charge of arrangements.
