Los Angeles Mayor. He came to Los Angeles just before California was admitted to the Union in 1850. His first term as Mayor was from May 4, 1852 to May 3, 1853. He served again from October 4, 1856 to May 9, 1859. He worked hard to establish the American systems in the new state. He opened the first English school in Los Angeles in his own home in 1850. His son, John Gregg Nichols, Jr., was the first baby born in the city as an American citizen, on April 15, 1851.
