Valeria Gladys Svoboda Howard peacefully left this earth on June 21, 2011, at Countrywood Assisted Living.

She was born May 22, 1918, in Kingfisher to Frank and Marie Svoboda.

Her parents emigrated from Czechoslovakia in the early part of the century and settled on land west of Kingfisher which remains in the family today.

Valeria was the second oldest of five siblings and worked on her parents farm growing up, graduating from Kingfisher High School in 1935.

She first married John Wilkinson and they farmed in Kingfisher for several years. John died in 1943, leaving Valeria a young widow. In 1944,

Valeria accepted a job at Peoples National Bank, where she worked for 41 years, as both a teller and bookkeeper. At the bank, Valeria was introduced to George Howard, who was home on furlough from the U.S. Armed Service.

They were married on Nov. 17, 1945, in the Ellison Ave. Methodist Church in El Reno, Okla., and were inseparable until his death in 2005.

George worked as an auto mechanic until his retirement. They were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Kingfisher.

George and Valeria had no children, but enjoyed all of their nieces and nephews as if they were their own.

During their marriage, they traveled through the United States and Canada; experiencing many beautiful memories.

They were especially known for their beautiful lawn, flowers and gardens, managing to win the Kingfisher Silver and Green Spade Award numerous times in the 34 years they lived in their home. Valeria and George loved to pass along seedlings and many local trees and shrubs started as gifts to their friends from the Howard's gardens.

Valeria is survived by her nieces and nephews; Roberta (Christian) Foster, George Christian, Steve Svoboda, Sandra (Svoboda) Richter and Patricia (Walter) Louthan, as well as cousins in the Czech Republic with whom she exchanged letters for many years. Her great-nieces and nephews are Lori (Foster) Ruhl, Susan (Foster) Lippoldt, Janet (Foster) Dougherty, Michael Christian, Gina (Christian) Pratt, Kyle Svoboda and Kendra (Svoboda) Cox.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Marie Svoboda, husband, George Howard, her sisters, Erma Christian and Ruth Walter, her two brothers, Ed Svoboda and Elvin Svoboda, and a nephew, Elvin Svoboda Jr.

A graveside service was set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25th in the Kingfisher Memorial Cemetery under direction of Sanders Funeral Service in Kingfisher.
