Mr. Edwin E. Chaffee, 83, of Sias Avenue, Newport died peacefully September 3, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born February 14, 1925 in Newport, a son of Walter and Flora (Shastney) Chaffee. On August 7, 1950 he married Mary Fedele, who survives him. Mr. Chaffee entered the United States Navy and served his country during WW11. He was a bookkeeper for Associated Insurance Company for twenty-five years. Ted was a member of the Masons and Shrine for over sixty years. He held membership with the American Legion Post 21 of Newport and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798. He was a life member of the Newport Elks Club #2155, an original member of the JC's, a long-time member of the Newport Country Club, and P.T. Boat Association member. He received the Purple Heart and was a member of its association. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, golfing and collecting stamps. He and Mary were members of the Community Circle with whom they made many trips, which included traveling to the carribean and several countries in Europe as well as all over the United States,including Alaska. He is survived by his wife Mary Chaffee of Newport, two children: Robert Chaffee and his wife Lynda of Morgan, and Donna Ratazak and her husband Robert of Danville, California. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Tara Patten and her husband Adam of Derby, Zachary Chaffee of Morgan, Samantha Chaffee of Morgan, Charles Ratazak of Danville, California, Anthony and Cathryn also of Danville, California and by the following great grandchildren: Bailey Cloney, Caitlin Patten and Treyton Patten all of Derby, by a brother Edward Chaffee and his wife Rita of Manchester,NH; and by a sister Priscilla Maslack of Essex Jct, and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Helen Chaffee and by a brother Richard Chaffee. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. on Friday September 5, 2008 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Rd, Newport where funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday September 6, 2008 with the Rev. John Keenan officiating.Members of Masonic Union Lodge F&AM are requested to meet at the funeral home Friday evening at 7:30 P.M. for a Masonic Service. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Legion,Post 21 Scholarship Fund, c/o P.O.Box 304, Newport, Vermont 05855.
