Professional Football Team Owner. He gained prominence in the first half of the 20th century for co-owning Borussia Dortmund Football Club, a German football or soccer team. In 1909 he and seventeen other men started the club. Working as a cashier then to managing director, he was chairman of the association from 1910 to 1923. After 1923, he was honorary chairman and active until the 1960 in an advisory capacity. When not involved with the sport, he was employed in the steel industry. "Borussia" is the Neo-Latin name for Prussia. While researching in 2013 for a documentary film about the history of the football club, it was learned that his marker had been removed, yet his common grave site had not been resold. Since his remains were still in the grave, his descendants, along with devoted fans, re-interred his remains to a new plot at Sudwestfriedhof or Southwest Cemetery in Dortmund on July 27, 2013 . The Holy Trinity Church held a service and later, a monument was erected to his honor on the site. His wife Lydia was also re-interred with him. The couple had one son. The documentary film, which was funded by 3,000 football fans, "Born On Borsigplatz-Franz Jacobi and the Cradle of BVV" was released in Germany in 2015 and now can be found on DVD.
