Born in Smithfield, RI, in a town named after his family, he was born in to a Quaker religion. He was educated in RI until the age of 14, then sent to Bolton Seminar in Bolton, Ma. He returned to his home at age 18 and worked training to be a machinist in his father's shop. His love was manufacturing which he learned in 3 years working at his brother's mill.

He worked for various companies and came to Manchester, NH in 1853 and became an agent for Manchester Print Works - MPW. He remained in their employ until 1871, resigned and decide to go to California and travel in the West. He returned to Manchester in 1872.

He considered himself a Liberal Republican and became a Col. in service to Gov Frederick Smyth's staff. It seems strange for a Quaker to have a rank of Col.

He married Anna Randall of N. Providence, RI also a Quaker, they had 9 children 4 sons who predeceased them, and 5 daughters. one daughter Nellie predeceased her parents as well. He died at age 76.

Have discovered another daughter Nattie who was married to Captain JC Currier of San Francisco.
