Melvin Andrew Bushong, age 88, died January 25th at his home in Centralia, Illinois. Melvin was the son of Ray and Anna Bushong. He was born March 20, 1927. Melvin was married to Eileen Gaskins Bushong on June 4th, 1948 and had 67 amazing years together. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Howard, Hubert, and Earl and one sister Wilma Dobbs. Melvin is survived by his pride and joy, his daughter Nancy Schofield, and her husband Tom Schofield of Edwardsville, Illinois. He is survived by 3 grandchildren; Amy Tucker and her husband Jerry Tucker of Suffolk, Virginia; Ann Langston and her husband Greg Langston of Edwardsville, Illinois; Jeremy Schofield and his wife Heather Schofield of Edwardsville, Illinois; 10 great-grandchildren; Andrew (wife Brittney), Christi (husband Shawn), Jacob, Carlee, Austin, Megan, David, Hayden, Tyler and Ethan; 2 great-great grandchildren; Max and Daisy. He taught his children to be generous, kind and to always eat candy before dinner.

Melvin Bushong was a proud veteran of the US Navy and served in WWII. He is a member of the First Christian Church in Centralia. After the war, Melvin owned and ran a service station and repaired many wrecked cars. Melvin was also a landlord owning many houses in Centralia and the surrounding cities. He finally retired from Coca Cola in 1989. Fishing, hunting, gardening tomatoes, camping and playing with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were Melvin’s greatest joys. He was also an avid Cardinal baseball fan, and a Centralia Orphans basketball fan.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

A service of celebration of life for Melvin will be held at Irvin Macz Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm on Friday, January 29th with the service at 1pm. Interment will be at Mt. Catherine Cemetery in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Centralia.

In lieu of flowers, everyone raise a can of Coke in honor of Melvin Bushong. Cheers!!
