Herbert was born near Lawrencville. He was drafted into the Army and assigned to 741st Tank Battalion Co. C. He received training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, and other places. On Oct. 22, 1943, he left the states from Camp Shanks, New York. He was stationed at Liverpool, England and took part in the initial invasion of Europe on "D" Day, June 6, 1944. He lost his life while crossing the English Channel. His body was first buried in a military ceremony in France, but in May 1949 was brought home for its final resting place in St. John's Evangelical Cemetery at Penntown.
