He was born in Rossville, and lived the last 60 years in the Brainerd and East Ridge areas. He was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his mother and father, Richard J. And Freda Wheeler.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific and received numerous campaign ribbons. Mr. Wheeler was retired from Eckerd Drug Store with 30 years of service. He opened the second Eckerds in Chattanooga in 1954 at the corner of Germantown and Brainerd Roads in addition to the Grant City Eckerds in Fort Oglethorpe.
Mr. Wheeler enjoyed camping and boating and also enjoyed working in his wood shop and selling his finished product along the roadside.
