Edward served in the Mexican War from July 1846 through August 1847, and in the Civil War he served in Jenning's Company D, Missouri Home Guard Regiment. He married Elender Smith in Polk County, MO on 4 January 1848. The couple had the following children: Sterling Wells, Mary Jane (Garrison), Cynthia L. (Hood), Charles W., Lemuel J., Thomas Judson, John Ephraim, Oliver S., twins Edward Bethel and Elender A. (Breeden), plus an unnamed son who died in March 1863. The cabin Edward built in the 1840s near Turnback Creek has been moved to Mt. Vernon and restored by the Lawrence County Historical Society.
